한국과 중국, 일본은 매년 6월 말에 장마철에 돌입한다. 그렇지만 최근 지구 온난화로 장마철이 짧거나 비가 거의 내리지 않는 경우도 있고 8월 말~9월 중순에 장마 때처럼 비가 내리는 경우도 잦아지고 있다.

이에 한국기상학회는 2년여에 걸친 논의 끝에 다양한 양상을 보이는 장마철 강수 특성을 반영해 장마의 학술적 정의를 새로 마련했다고 5일 밝혔다.

학회는 기상청 장마특화연구센터를 중심으로 약 2년 동안 논의와 국민 대상 설문조사를 통해 장마 정의 안을 마련해 대기과학용어심의위원회 검토를 거쳐 확정했다.

학회는 최근 장맛비가 장마전선에 의해서만 내리지 않는다는 점, 과거 교과서에서 ‘장마전선의 한 축’으로 설명됐던 오호츠크해 고기압이 실제 존재하는지 불분명하다는 점 등을 반영해 장마, 장마철, 장맛비를 각기 정의했다.

‘장마’는 국립국어원 표준국어대사전 정의를 따라 ‘여름철에 여러 날 계속해서 비가 내리는 현상이나 날씨’로 규정했다.

그리고 ‘장마철’은 ‘여름철 북태평양고기압이 확장하며 북상하는 시기에 남쪽의 온난습윤한 기단과 북쪽의 한랭한 기단 사이에서 다양한 기작에 의해 다량의 강수가 한반도에 발생하기 좋은 조건이 형성되는 기간’으로, 장맛비는 ‘장마철 내리는 비’로 정의했다.

이번 결정에 따라 ‘지속적인 강수’로 인식돼온 장마의 정의를 확장해 장마철을 강수가 발생할 수 있는 조건이 형성된 기간으로 정했다. 비가 상대적으로 적게 오거나 오지 않은 날도 장마철에 포함되게 된 것이다.
